Variety is the spice of life, with Ball Pythons!

Beautiful, Ball Python Morph

If variety is the spice of life, it’s easy to see why Ball Pythons are such popular pets!

With so many colors, patterns, and morphs available. More emerging every year...it’s hard to keep up!

We’re excited to offer a wide range of these uniquely beautiful snakes, and we’re thrilled to celebrate them as Animal of the Month: The Ball Python (Python regius).

Ball Pythons are beloved for their docile nature. Unlike more aggressive species, they curl into a ball when threatened—a behavior so distinct, it inspired their name. Native to Western Africa, they thrive in tropical grasslands and are also known as Royal Pythons due to their revered status in some cultures.

Scales ‘N Tails recommends Ball Pythons for beginners and experienced keepers alike. They typically grow to 3½–4½ feet—ideal for most homes—and years of captive breeding have produced an incredible variety of morphs. They're hardy, relatively easy to care for, and generally gentle.

Housing them is simple. Babies do well in a 10-gallon terrarium, juveniles in 20-gallon, and adults in a 40-gallon breeder. Zoo Med Forest Floor Bedding (2–3 inches deep) helps retain humidity. Add a water dish and a hide like the Zoo Med Habba-Hut, and the setup is complete.

Keep a basking spot at 90–96°F and ambient temps at 78–80°F. Humidity should be around 60%, which you can maintain by misting the substrate. Use a thermometer and humidity gauge for accuracy. Feed an appropriately sized, pre-killed mouse or rat once a week.

With proper care, your Ball Python can live 30+ years—the record is 47!

If you’ve been thinking about a new pet snake, now’s the perfect time!
