July's Animal of the month: Leopard Gecko (Eublepharis macularius), a true classic!

ree

At Scales 'N Tails, we’re passionate about lizards, and it's incredible how many species are now available in the pet industry. When we started as a company, the options were limited, but reptiles have come a long way! This July 2025, we’re highlighting the Leopard Gecko (Eublepharis macularius), a true classic.

Native to Afghanistan and Pakistan, Leopard Geckos are crepuscular, meaning they’re most active at dawn and dusk. During the day, they hide in burrows to escape the heat, and in winter, they survive off fat reserves in their tails. They can even drop their tails to escape predators, with the tail twitching for up to 30 minutes to distract attackers.

Leopard Geckos are perfect pets for both beginners and experts. They grow to about 10 inches, are hardy, and usually have a docile temperament. With many color and pattern morphs available, they’re one of the most popular pet reptiles, and possibly the first domesticated lizard species.

Caring for them is easy. We recommend a 20-gallon long tank with reptile carpet as substrate and a hiding spot with damp moss for shedding. A shallow water dish and decorations will enrich the habitat. Keep the temperature between 80-85°F, with a basking spot at 95°F. Leopard Geckos eat insects like Dubia Roaches or Crickets every other day—no plants or veggies!

With proper care, Leopard Geckos can live 6-10 years, with some males reaching 20+. They’re also excellent hunters, stalking prey with precision and using their 100 teeth to capture food.

For July, we’re offering 20% off all Leopard Geckos, including all morphs and sizes, while supplies last! Now’s the perfect time to bring home one of these amazing geckos.
